Hi, I’m Derek. I was born in Ohio, I went to Kent State University (“Kan’t read, Kan’t write, Kent State!) for English, but dropped out to work at a copy shop. At the copy shop I fell in love with clip art, mostly by Tom Tierney and the 90s zine called Crap Hound. I started making paintings of clip art-like images on squares, Eventually I saturated my market and was forced to take myself vaguely more seriously, painting on slightly uneven large canvases. I moved to Seattle and started working at the record label Sub Pop, all the while still painting. I recently moved (back) to Chicago at the beginning of a traumatic winter. Now at least it is kind of spring, thank f****** god.

My girlfriend is pretty into fashion, and I was recently working on sketches for a painting commission that was a history of fashion from the 70s and 80s. I spent a lot of time looking at images of Diane von Furstenberg dresses. Even though I’m from Ohio and dress like an unfortunate teenager, I appreciate fashion as a costume and art form, though I have a low tolerance for uncomfortable clothes.
